The last storm happened days ago and ever since then the power has been on and off, trees that still had life left in them have now fallen to the ground, across streets, and houses. Walking outside, it is partially foggy but still and silent but the stray dogs digging in the knocked over trash cans are still visible. It’s a Saturday, one of the busy days in the week, yet the streets are empty, bare, and dark. The hum of cicadas fill the stale night air, street lamps flicker in an almost perfect pattern, as the moon peeks out from behind the remaining trees. It’s as if the earth has gone still, waiting for something bigger.
There was never a more pretentious white boy. Jimbathé Abdikadir blared kora at all times. Jimbathé wasn’t even his real name. In actuality, the nuisance was named Davis Travis. After a spiritual journey in Africa, he took up the kora, and his addled lifestyle brought his performances upon St. ---- at all times of day. He strummed on his kora endlessly, brooding over his misfortune. These infuriating people never tipped him! His playing was amazing, he just knew it. Why else, at 27, would his upper-crust parents still shove money at him to pursue his “art”?
On this day in St. --- history, an old circus ringleader came to town. All he’s brought with him of his former circus is an ostrich, an alligator, and a tigon (or liger, it doesn’t mind). He comes to the fountain in the middle of town with his animals. As the crowds start to gather, he starts to speak.
“Top of the morning, ladies and gents. I come from far away, but my practice I’m sure is familiar to you folk. I’ve traveled from Coxdale to Piddleville with my one-man circus, providing free entertainment to people of all sorts. So, my dear audience, enjoy!”
The former ringleader, with a morbid twinkle in his eye, lets his animals loose and immediately skips town. Now, there are wild animals roaming the streets, with the alligator settling in the fountain.
The ostrich and tigon, now out of a line of work, take a tour of the beautiful city of St. ---. What adventures does this perturbing town hold in store for them? At least until animal control takes Ozzy and Harold around 10 pm or so. Orville remains free, swimming happily in the fountain for all of time.
At six thirty A.M. Officer Wood receives a call from the Meridians superintendent that a tenant of the Meridian has had a squatter named Jimbo living in their home unknowingly for months.
